Community Spaces Grants

Community Spaces has opened its doors to the eagerly awaited large and flagship grants. Grants of between £50,000 and £450,000 are now up for grabs for community groups wanting to improve green and open spaces in their neighbourhoods.

The launch of the large and flagship grants means that groups are now able to expand their horizons further and apply for bigger pots of money to create and re-vamp green spaces. The larger grants will be distributed on a competitive basis and only four large grants (£50,000 - £100,000) and one flagship grant (£100,001 - £450,000) will be allocated in each English region.

There is only one opportunity to apply for a large or flagship grant and deadlines have been set for January 2009. As with small and medium grants, there is a two-stage application process and applicants successful at stage 1 will be allocated a Facilitator to support the development of their project.

Community Spaces is looking to fund groups with innovative, practical and sustainable ideas that will benefit areas in need of physical improvement. Possible large and flagship projects may include canal side improvements, cycle path routes, nature reserves, woodlands or city farms.

Community Spaces has been open for small and medium (£10,000 - £49,999) since March 2008 and has so far received over 200 applications. Small and medium grants will continue to be available on a rolling basis until 2011.

More information about grants from Community Spaces and application packs can be found at: www.community-spaces.org.uk or via the Advice Line 0845 3 671 671.

Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire have a number of staff members who are available to help applicants develop their projects at Stage 2. There is a section in the initial application form to request this support which is free of charge. Applicants will then be signposted to the relevant facilitator for further support on issues such as biodiversity and planning.

Influencing the Legislative Process

Hansard Society, the parliamentary democracy organisation, has published a report analysing the influences and elements that come together in making an act of Parliament, including the role of the media, voluntary organisations, professional associations and other outside factors.  'Law in the Making: Influence and Change in the Legislative Process' found that input from such groups and individuals can have an impact on the legislation but it varies.
