High Peak CVS Members Meeting: Funding Your Future

High Peak CVS held a Members Meeting on Thursday 1 July 2010 at Buxton Methodist Church on the theme of 'Funding Your Future: Adapt, Survive and Thrive!'

The key speaker was Tony Okotie, CEO of Tameside Third Sector Coalition, with an overview of the national picture, the challenges facing voluntary organisations and examples of ways of working.

Two facilitated workshops looked at how local groups may be affected and what can be done to protect the sector from the worst effects - assessing risks and developing survival strategies.

Based on issues raised in these workshops there followed a Question and Answer session to a panel of public sector representatives: David Lowe - Strategic Director at DCC; Colin Hill - Head Patient Experience at TGPCT; Mark Forrester - Head of Communities at HPBC; Tom Levitt - former MP for High Peak.

Video clips from the speech and panel can be seen at -

Disabled People's Organisations on Improving Support

The Office for Disability Issues is working in partnership with Capacitybuilders’ new support providers’ website. www.improvingsupport.org.uk/disability provides a gateway for disabled people’s organisations to learn more about the resources and initiatives that are available to strengthen their organisations and support what they do. It will also help mainstream organisations better understand how they can meet the needs of disabled people’s organisations through their work.

Free Help for Compliance with HR and H&S Legislation

Charity Builder UK is a free, online service which can be used by all not-for-profit groups including charities, community groups and social enterprises. The service has been funded by Capacitybuilders, and developed in recognition that small and medium sized charities often find it hard to comply with Human Resources and Health and Safety legislation – two notoriously difficult, time consuming and costly areas of essential administration which increasingly need to be demonstrated as part of funding applications.

Social Media Case Study and Toolkit Help Recruit Volunteers

As part of the Capacitybuilders' funded Modernising Volunteering workstream, the Volunteer Centre Brighton and Hove were selected by Red Foundation – leaders of the ‘New Forms of Involving Volunteers’ workstrand – to pilot the use of social network services to demonstrate how volunteering support services and volunteer managers could benefit by actively engaging with these networks.

After exploring various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and i-volunteer to support their day to day work the Volunteer Centre has put together a case study and toolkit for volunteer centres and other volunteering support services.

Cuts

Claire Thornber, Voice for the VCS Project Officer, is producing a round-up of cuts. Highlights (?) are:

East Midlands Development Agency (emda) has been told to make cuts of £28.3M (22.7%) this financial year, one of the highest percentage cuts in the country.

Citizen’s Advice is facing an 11.6% (£2.4 million) cut to an expected £20.8M grant from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills in 2010/11.

Arts Council has a £19M reduction in 2010/2011 income from central government.

Independent Living Fund. for severely disabled people to buy care and support, has closed to applications less than three months into the financial year.

Community and Local Government has given more details about spending cuts across all local authorities. The announcement can be found at www.communities.gov.uk. One East Midlands has produced a summarised version of the cuts.

Spending Challenge Ideas

Following the emergency budget and the announcement that many Government departments will be facing 25 percent cuts in their budgets, the Government is asking frontline staff, including those in the third sector, to submit their ideas online to The Spending Challenge, for how the public sector can save money. This is an opportunity for the sector to think outside traditional boundaries and to influence Government thinking on priorities over the coming years.
