Enterprise Champions Recruitment

  • Are you a VCS development worker or funding advisor?
  • Are you interested in trading and enterprise?
  • Do you want to help develop a package of support for frontline organisations to help them think about, plan and do first stage development of enterprising activities and business planning?
  • Do you have up to 6 days available from January to October 2010 to attend training and support sessions?

The DTA are looking for 15 enterprise champions from Third Sector Infrastructure Organisations (general and specialist) in the East Midlands. Champions will help them pilot a package of support tools and information with frontline organisations and take part in review and action learning sessions to develop and improve the support package. There is an honorarium of £500 for each champion, plus 2 days free training.

Background
The SUTE project has been developed in response to a consultation carried out across the region by Social Enterprise East Midlands (SEEM) during August 2008. This showed that ‘currently support is weak for potential social enterprises at the ‘pre pre start’ stage. In particular there is a lack of understanding and expertise within generalist TSIOs of progression routes and how to meet VCOs’ initial needs’.

It is one of a suite of regional Capacitybuilders-funded projects running concurrently. The others focus on:
- Peer support and networking
- Encouraging black, asian & minority ethnic organisations to engage in social enterprise
- Networking amongst mature social enterprises

Project Co-ordinators
The project is being led by High Peak CVS with Enterprise Solutions Northamptonshire and the Development Trusts Association East Midlands as project partners.

For more info, please email Naomi Diamond at the Development Trusts Association Naomi Diamond putting ‘Enterprise Champions’ in the subject bar.

All Employers to File Annual Returns Online

New Law Will Allow Reduced Drainage Charges

The Government has announced legislation to allow water companies to apply concessionary charges for community organisations such as scout groups, amateur sports clubs and faith groups.  This follows the uproar over the huge increases such organisations have seen in surface water charges on the move to a new way of calculating bills based on size of premises/surface area.  The law will be brought in as part of the Flood and Water Management Bill coming before Parliament in its next session.  Official news item at www.defra.gov.uk/news/2009/090928a.htm

Sector Support Needs to be Tailored to the Organisations

Research for Capacitybuilders, the body set up by government to improve the capacity of the third sector, has highlighted the importance of providing support to voluntary organisations which is tailored to their needs, rather than a "one-size fits-all" approach.  It identifies a range of critical factors which contribute to the successful development and growth of smaller third sector organisations.

Capacitybuilders news item.  'Testing Different Models of Support' report is meant to be on the Improving Support website, but at the moment the link given via www.improvingsupport.org/resources_by_topic/evaluation_and_learning/ doesn't work.
