Lottery Funding Discussion Meeting in New Mills

On Friday 8 June the Head of the Big Lottery Fund in the East Midlands, Mick McGrath, will be at New Mills Volunteer Centre. Any member of a local voluntary organisation who would like to meet him to discuss general Lottery Funding issues can come along at 7pm to this meeting organised by Tom Levitt.  If possible please inform Mr Levitt's office of your plans to attend (Tel 01298 71111).

Grant Aid is Still Needed Locally

Ten sector support bodies, including Directory of Social Change, Community Foundation Network and Women's Resource Centre, have launched a campaign to promote the importance of grant aid.

Their 'Sustaining Grants' booklet argues that grant aid is an essential part of the local funding mix for community organisations and remains essential for thriving local communities. The booklet is available in pdf and Word formats, and the latter can be edited to add case studies appropriate for a local audience. Go to NAVCA's web site at www.navca.org.uk/publications/sustaininggrants

Research into Churches Providing Welfare Services

The Church of England has commissioned research into the implications of local churches undertaking welfare services, in response to the government's (and other politicians) growing interest in partnerships with faith-based organisations. The C of E will also develop advice and guidelines for parishes and dioceses considering becoming involved in providing these services.

Understanding Standards for Trustees

'What Management Committees Need to Know' is a guide to help small voluntary organisations understand the Trustee and Management Committee National Occupational Standards, and provides an introduction to key issues. Download in pdf format, 844kb

Four National Support Services in Place of Six Hubs

The current six sector 'hubs of expertise' are to be replaced with four National Support Services under proposals produced by Capacitybuilders, which now manages the funding under the government's ChangeUp programme. Its Draft Framework Paper for these services has been prepared following the Destination 2014 consultations which finished in March. Capacitybuilders is inviting comments by 2nd July - see www.capacitybuilders.org.uk/info/story/default.asp?item=66 (the paper is in pdf format, 141kb). Or read an overview in Charity Finance news alert.

The four support themes of Finance, Performance, Workforce and Voice would each have a 'strategic lead' organisation, with specific projects delivered by 'programme lead' organisations. The suggested programme areas include: in Finance - fundraising, business planning, public service delivery; in Performance - quality assurance, strategic planning, ICT, mergers and alliances; Workforce - governance, volunteer management, employment policies; Voice - campaigning, user involvement, advocacy, community action.

A single gateway to information, advice and sign-posting for both infrastructure organisations and frontline third sector organisations is also proposed.

We are the Champions!

High Peak CVS’s IT services wing, Digital Umbrella, have recently been appointed as the 'Regional IT Champions' for the East Midlands, with funding from the ICT Hub until March 2008 for this role.

Tony Okotie will be leading this work, with support from the rest of the team. For the last three years, under Tony’s direction, High Peak CVS have been leading on delivering various IT projects and IT services across Derbyshire, designed to help 3rd sector organisations make the most of IT in delivering their mission. These services are now branded 'Digital Umbrella' and run as a social enterprise. This project naturally fits with the work of Digital Umbrella. Tony is looking forward to contributing to the more effective use of ICT by the sector.

He said “technology is not a force for good in its own right – its how it is used that is important. I’m looking forward to working with organisations and partners to help create an environment where there is increased recognition of what ICT can do, and how to resource it, along with better support for organisations in how to use it”.

To find out more about the role of the Regional Champion, and how it could benefit your group, visit the Digital Umbrella  website or call Tony on 01663 736 422.

Get Your Logo – on the Go Go!

First impressions count, and a professionally designed logo can create the right impression and help build awareness of your organisation.

Logosagogo is a new, creative design service from Digital Umbrella, creating or redesigning the logo for your organisation, business or project.

We offer three levels of service with logosagogo, depending on the number of initial designs that you require and the complexity of the work. All levels include:

  • Initial consultation (telephone or face to face, depending on level of service chosen)
  • Production of draft designs
  • Follow up consultation and amendment to chosen design
  • Chosen design, produced in various formats and resolutions, provided on CD
  • Provision of pantone and RGB colour references, to allow you to match new publicity materials to the logo

At the start of the process, we ask you to send any current logos, promotional information, mission statement etc to help us get a “sense” of your organisation. We aim to turn round draft designs in two weeks from commission.

To find out more, and to get your logo on the go go, visit the Digital Umbrella website or call us on 01663 736 422.

Launch of the High Peak Braille Group

A new brailling group officially launches next week, with the aim to make brailled materials more widely available to the visually impaired.

Funding for the project has been raised partly from the local Primary Care Trust but largely from the generosity of local businesses and charities. As well as menus, the group can provide brailled greeting cards, knitting patterns, newsletters and even books!

The High Peak Braille group will be holding an official launching party on 14th June at the Scout Hut on Victoria Park Road and everyone is invited to go along and see work in progress and enjoy refreshments from 2.00 – 4.00pm.

As well as producing brailled material, the group will be holding Braille reading classes – which will be open to both sighted and the visually impaired. So if you fancy learning a new language – let your fingers do the work! For more information about this exciting project ring Liz on 01298 79707 or Sue on 01298 871150, email suewalker@uwclub.net
