High Peak Election Question Time

Wed 21 April, 6pm to 8pm
in the main church hall at Whaley Bridge Uniting Church, Buxton Road, Whaley Bridge

What will the future hold for the voluntary sector after the General Election?

Your chance to ask the parliamentary candidates in High Peak the questions that matter to your organisation.

To book a place and put forward a question contact:
Voice for the VCS Project Officer, Claire Thornber
Email: c.thornber@ruralactionderbyshire.org.uk
Phone: 07827 243800.

High Peak CVS working with the Voice Project and the Uniting Church, Whaley Bridge are delighted to announce an opportunity for the High Peak Community and Voluntary Sector Organisations to ask questions of the parliamentary candidates in the High Peak.

This lively session will offer you the chance to ask the questions that matter to your organisation. Kevin Skingsley, Chief Executive, High Peak CVS says, “I know local groups will want to take this opportunity to ask the questions that matter to them about their future role and resourcing. I’m looking forward to a big turnout and some interesting debates”

A recent national survey commissioned by Third Sector found that 42% of voluntary organisations responding felt an outright Labour victory at the next election would be in their best interests, 13% would prefer a Conservative victory, 18% chose the Liberal Democrats and 14% a hung parliament; although there were smaller differences when groups were asked their opinion of the parties’ overall philosophy.

The Labour party and the Conservatives have published policy papers on the third sector (‘Mutual Action, Common Purpose: Empowering the Third Sector’ and ‘A Stronger Society: Voluntary Action in the 21st Century’ respectively and the Conservatives last week published ‘Building a Big Society’). This is your opportunity to find out more about the policies which will affect community and voluntary organisations within the High Peak.

The three main party’s election commitments to the voluntary sector can be viewed at www.navca.org.uk/news/electionarticles.htm

Please put forward specific questions at least 4 working days before the event. This will help to timetable the session ensuring that everyone gets to ask their question and give the candidates some preparation time.

ICT Workshops

Alongside ICT health checks the Regional ICT Project will be offering ICT workshops for third sector local infrastructure organisations (LIOs). These will be aimed at development workers and other staff involved in providing support to frontline organisations.

The purpose of these workshops is to enable LIO development workers to be more skilled and confident about supporting organisations with their ICT needs. For example, the workshop will provide key tools for signposting organisations to appropriate sources of help, including the wide range of ICT resources which are available online.

Topics covered will include:

  • What help is available to organisations
  • Benefits of ICT
  • Costing and funding ICT
  • ICT planning
  • DiY health checks
  • Social media
  • Other resources and ‘top tips'

The project will be offering a number of these workshops throughout the region. These workshops have been designed for non-technical staff – you do not need to be an ICT ‘expert' to take part, quite the opposite.

Survey – shaping the ICT workshops

The project would like your help in shaping the workshops. Help to finalise the content for upcoming workshops in your area by answering a short questionnaire :

www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=f2_2fDkxYcRdGaFZQ_2bu7495A_3d_3d

The survey is aimed at development workers and other staff involved in providing support to frontline organisations. By answering the questionnaire you can also let the project know if you might be interested in attending a workshop.

National Survey of Third Sector Organisations

A practical user guide to the National Survey of Third Sector Organisations and the data generated from the first wave of the survey has been produced by the Office of the Third Sector. The first set of results and accompanying analysis from the National Survey of Third Sector Organisations provide a huge source of information on the third sector and its relationship with local public bodies.

This guide therefore aims to help local partners use the data in a practical way, helping to drive improved local performance against National Indicator 7 and improve the relationship between third sector and its public sector partners. As well as providing clear information on what the survey can and can’t tell us, the guide provides practical suggestions on how to use the survey data in the most effective way at a local level.

The guide can be downloaded from www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk and for more information visit www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk
