Impact of Management Skills Gaps

A study of sector skills, based on the views of third sector employers from four English cities plus findings from Voluntary Sector Skills Survey 2007, identifies that a skills gap at management level has the greatest impact.

Impact of the Good Governance Code

A research report into the awareness, impact and success of the Code of Good Governance has been produced for the Governance Hub by nfpSynergy.  A high proportion of those responding reckoned that the Code is easy to understand, applicable to their organisation and useful.  However, issues identified include: the language and style of the Code need to be more accessible; the Code needs refining for a variety of audiences (while retaining its universal principles); and smaller organisations need tailored and specific help and support.  See the press release at www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/press/releases/?id=9892 or download 'Review and development of the Code of Good Governance' (pdf, 658KB).

New Guidance on CRB Checks for Volunteers

The Office of the Third Sector (OTS) has published guidance to help organisations that use volunteers to be clear about when they do and don’t need to carry out Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks on volunteers.

The guidance will help cut unnecessary red tape and responds to concerns voiced by the voluntary sector that potential volunteers can be put off if they are asked to undergo a CRB check without good reason.

www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/third_sector/news/news_stories/080604_crb.aspx

Disability Information Portal

Leonard Cheshire Disability is setting up a website to act as a gateway for advice and information on disability. They hope that people's comments on its disability information portal will spark debate on disability issues and shape policy and opinion. The full site will launch next year, but the pilot version is available at www.dip-online.org.

Communities in Control: Empowerment White Paper

The 'Communities in Control: real people, real power,' is a white paper that discusses shifting power into the hands of communities and consequently, into the hands of the people. Its key themes are power, influence and control: who has power, on whose behalf is it exercised, how is it held to account, how it can be diffused throughout the communities we live in and how people can use existing and new tools to access it. It is about democracy, and how democratic practices and ideals can be applied to our society today.

The white paper may be downloaded at:
www.communities.gov.uk/communities/communityempowerment/communitiesincontrol/

A pdf briefing may be downloaded.
