New Grant Fund for High Peak

Rural Heritage funding is available through the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE).  The LEADER Approach is administered by the Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership and the Local Action Group.  At present under this measure there is a total budget of £95,000 allocated.  The project must be based in and be for the benefit of Communities in Derbyshire Dales, High Peak Borough and Staffordshire Moorlands with the exception of the main Market Towns.

Grants awards have a lower limit of £3,500 and can fund up to 75% of total eligible project costs.  Higher grant rates could be considered in certain circumstances if your project meets eligible criteria and you are unable to meet the minimum match funding requirement of 25%.  Priority will be given to formally constituted small community based organisations/social enterprises, parish councils and charities.  Larger organisations applying would need to clearly demonstrate partnership working with communities in the area.

Please contact Amanda Brown at Amanda.brown@ddep.co.uk or call 01629 816268 for an initial expression of interest form or download from www.ddep.co.uk  Please ask if you would like support completing the form.

Guidance on Privacy Notices in Data Collection

A 'Privacy notices code of practice' has been produced by the Information Commissioner's Office on the use of such notices when collecting information about people for use by an organisation.  It sets out guidance on what a privacy notice should contain, with examples based on real privacy notices, and emphasises that it needs to explain the less obvious elements of how an individual's personal data could be used.  See www.ico.gov.uk/for_organisations/topic_specific_guides/privacy_notices.aspx

The Information Commissioner's Office has also issued a short 'Data Protection Good Practice Note: When can I disclose information to a private investigator?' which can help organisations decide what to do if approached.  Download pdf, 46KB.

Sector Implications of the Personalisation of Public Services

Charity chief executives body ACEVO has launched a Commission to look at the personalisation of public services – the various reforms underway to personalise services (for example, individual budgets), what the third sector's contribution could be, what the implications are for the sector, and what can be done to support the sector to seize the opportunities and address the challenges associated with personalisation.

£42.5M to Help Volunteers, Charities and Social Enterprises

The Government has pledged £42.5 million to help volunteers, charities and social enterprises deliver extra real help to those that need it most, during the global economic downturn.  The action plan for the third sector sets out a targeted package of support that includes measures to help hundreds of voluntary organisations, charities, and social enterprises step up advice, support and volunteering in the areas that need it most across the country.

The plan, which has been designed together with third sector leaders over the last three months, builds on the wide range of measures the Government has put in place to support people through the economic downturn, and on the Government's long term commitment to voluntary organisations and social enterprises.  The Government has doubled government help to charities, voluntary group and social enterprises from £5.5 billion to over £11 billion.  That means these vital groups face the downturn with unprecedented strength.

Capacitybuilders Volunteer Management Programme

Following commitments made by the Office of the Third Sector in response to recommendations of the 2008 Commission on the Future of Volunteering, Capacitybuilders has launched the Volunteer Management Programme.

This £3m grants programme will provide support to people who manage volunteers, and will help ensure that volunteers themselves get the best possible experience.  In designing the programme the Office of the Third Sector and Capacitybuilders considered inputs from a range of other consultations and debates that have taken place since 2006 and then 'tested' initial proposals amongst a group of key stakeholders.

The resulting programme will now be delivered via three inter-connected strands:
Strand A – £1.6 million to March 2011, thirty-two local consortia have been identified as eligible to apply based on pre-defined criteria.  Strand A is not an open grant programme; a limited number of consortia, local partnerships developed under the ChangeUp programme, are being invited to submit proposals based on local priorities and complimenting existing provision and plans.  Projects will be delivered by a relevant local agency or partnership with relevant expertise.
Strand B – £200,000 to March 2011, a single grant directed at the national strategic support of volunteer management.  Work will be coordinated via the existing Modernising Volunteering national support service, also funded by Capacitybuilders, and managed by Volunteering England.  Work under the second strand of the Volunteer Management Programme will include bringing together new and legacy resources and key guidance so they are easier for people to locate and access, identifying and disseminating learning and best practice, from Strand A projects and wider, and taking a lead in promoting volunteer management within the wider skills agenda.
Stand C – up to £1 million, available from April 2010 a bursary fund to help support training and development for people managing volunteers.  Over the coming months, Capacitybuilders will continue working with stakeholders to develop proposals for the bursary fund ahead of its launch in spring 2010.
