Basic Health and Safety

CIEH Foundation Certificate in Health and Safety in the Workplace

This course provides the essential knowledge to enable delegates to contribute to any health and safety management system.  Good health and safety standards rely on employers and their employees working together to reduce risks and prevent accidents and ill health arising from work activities.  This course is often lively, involving much debate and discussion between delegates and trainer.

This course is suitable for all employees working in any sector of commerce and industry.  It is an excellent introduction for new employees or those requiring an overview of health and safety in the workplace.

Topics covered:

  • legislation roles and responsibilities;
  • use of work equipment;
  • accidents and ill-health;
  • risk assessment;
  • first aid at work;
  • personal protective equipment;
  • health, safety and welfare;
  • fire prevention;
  • hazardous substances;
  • DSE/manual handling; and
  • noise at work.

The syllabus can also be tailored to suit the needs of your organisation, e.g. office workers may require more input regarding the use of Display Screen Equipment.

Objectives: The course will enable the student to work in a safe and healthy manner and contribute to improving health and safety in the organisation.  Delegates will understand the importance of health and safety rules and working procedures.

Assessment: If CIEH certification is required the course is assessed via a multiple-choice exam and successful candidates will receive a nationally recognised CIEH certificate.  An Ouch attendance certificate will be issued to delegates not undertaking the CIEH exam or for those who are unsuccessful in the exam.

Refreshments will be provided.

at  St Joseph’s Church Village Hall, Butterley Hill, Ripley, Derbyshire, DE5 3LW

Suicide is a problem for society as a whole.  To increase awareness – and to help remove the stigma which can be a barrier for those in need of help – this free half-day training seminar should be of interest to anyone who wishes to:

  • examine their own attitudes;
  • find out (and challenge) the myths that surround suicide;
  • discover the likely suicide risk factors and warning signs; and
  • find out how you might help someone at risk of suicide and self harm.

The training is open to everyone; the general public as well as those whose work is more likely to bring them into contact with people at greater risk of suicide and self harm.

Places at this training event are limited so advance booking is essential.  Please do not be put off if you are unable to attend this seminar - the training will be held at various locations throughout Derbyshire over the next three years.

Volunteering Charter Agreed with TUC

The Trades Union Congress and Volunteering England have produced a joint 'Charter for Strengthening Relations Between Paid Staff and Volunteers'.  It aims to strengthen the ties between paid staff and volunteers, with the trade union movement, itself one of the biggest examples of volunteering, recognising the value that volunteers provide to the economy and wider society.  VE news item or go to www.tuc.org.uk/volunteering for TUC basic guidance on legal issues and a link to the Charter.

Call for Evidence on Rights for Volunteers

The call for evidence by the Volunteer Rights Inquiry, set up by Volunteering England, has now been issued.  Contributions are invited by uploading a video on YouTube, contacting via Twitter or an online form, or the three evidence sessions in the new year (19 January in York, 27 January in London, or 2 February in Birmingham).  See VRI call here.  Anyone with information, good or bad experiences or opinions on the topic of volunteers rights is welcome.

Most Charity Trustees Aware of Public Benefit Requirement

The Charity Commission has published research into the levels of awareness, understanding, and attitudes across the charity sector on the public benefit requirement.  While the Commission sees the results as showing a "good level", it reckons that there is still work to do.

Key findings in news item at www.charitycommission.gov.uk/news/prpbreq.asp or download 'Charities Awareness, Understanding and Attitudes towards the Public Benefit Requirement' in pdf, 1.79MB from

Clarifying Definition of Volunteering in Vetting Scheme

Third Sector magazine states that a report due out soon from Sir Roger Singleton, chair of the Independent Safeguarding Authority, will provide more clarity on what will count as volunteering under the new vetting and barring scheme, and what will be classed as an "informal agreement" that will not require a check.  Under the new rules, volunteers working with children or vulnerable adults would face fines of £5,000 if they fail to register.  News item at www.thirdsector.co.uk/News/972802/

Videos on Working in Collaboration

Five short films exploring the issue of working in collaboration to deliver services have been added to the resource section of the bassac website, www.bassac.org.uk/dms/list/0/all/all/video

Pressures Continue on Sector Support Organisations

The second survey of third sector support providers by funding body Capacitybuilders finds that demand for support continues to increase alongside reduced income.  Download the report (pdf, 61KB) via news item at www.capacitybuilders.org.uk/node/266

Social Network for Volunteers

A new social network "for people who love everything and anything to do with volunteering" was launched for International Volunteer Day, 5 December

i-volunteer at www.i-volunteer.org.uk has had support from Red Foundation.

'Reflections' - an Account of Volutary Sector Restructuring

NAVCA has published 'Reflections', an account of the restructuring of local infrastructure organisations (LIO) in Leicestershire earlier this year. Although an analysis of the experience in Leicestershire, it highlights many issues that are important to any charity considering greater collaboration or merger.

Kevin Curley, Chief Executive of NAVCA said "There is a lot of interest in charity mergers and restructuring at the moment but little information around about what is actually involved. Structural change is never painless. There are always obstacles to overcome and hidden costs. Too often the stories are told once the dust has settled - and problems conveniently forgotten. However, it is these problems that offer the greatest learning experiences.

This publication is a frank look at these issues. Martin's observations as an insider in the process are priceless and offer a rare insight into the realities of this sort of organisational change. Anyone connected to a charity considering structural change including merger should read this - especially trustees. The report shows that trustees must lead the process of change and not leave it to staff."
