Challenge to 'Fit and Proper' Test
Charity sector specialist solicitors Bates Wells and Braithwaite are planning to challenge the need for HM Revenue and Customs to use the new 'fit and proper person' test when new trustees or senior managers are appointed by a charity. They says that the Charity Commission already provides adequate regulation and additional checks by HMRC would increase administrative costs.

Exploring the Idea of a Civil Society University
The idea of a "civil society university" focused on higher education for the sector is to be progressed, with a small grant from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. This will pay for a feasibility study and a conference to explore the next stages. Such a university is likely to be virtual rather than physical. Improving Outcomes through Public Services and Civil Society Working Together
A new report from the Young Foundation gives anecdotal and empirical evidence to suggest outcomes are improved when public services and civil society work hand in hand. It suggests "five promising ideas" of local innovation brokers, Community Dividends, 'sweating' public assets, new local and national performance measures, and a continued spur to improve local partnerships. Understanding Social Media Jargon
The Social by Social website has a useful jargonbuster section, helping you to crack the terminology used around new technology, and social media in particular. Unfortunately some of the text colours used are too light for easy reading on screen, www.socialbysocial.com/book/jargonbuster-0 |

An Introduction to Social Media
Free breakfast briefing on the benefits of social media - an introduction to social media, the online resources and their applications.
Many businesses are feeling the need to create a presence for their brand in what is known as online social spaces, social networking or social media, most commonly Facebook and Twitter. There is a pressure to understand why, how and define the return on investment afforded by indulging in this rapidly expanding digital domain and being able to communicate using them is fundamental to the success and sustainability in business for the future.
This event is part of Transformational ICT, funded by East Midlands Development Agency and the European Regional Development Fund. The presentation will provide an introduction to the full spectrum of social media from marketing output amplification and customer engagement to business productivity, reputation building and brand development. We will also answer questions such as how will my business benefit from social technologies, platforms, tools and services, how do I maintain control of my assets and maintain an effective presence with minimal costs and which area of my business should I apply social media to first?
For more information or to register your place, please call 0845 603 8370 or email enquiries@ebusinessclub.biz. Places are limited and must be pre-booked. |

Voice for the VCS Survey
The Voice for the VCS in Derbyshire project was set up in 2008 to help voluntary and community groups understand Local Area Agreements and the work of Local Strategic Partnerships. You may have attended events and training sessions that they have organised in partnership with the project and you probably receive a bi-monthly LAA bulletin.
The project is coming to the end of its second year and, as part of the evaluation, has set up a web-based survey to see how it is doing. The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete and will really help us to see whether the project has been useful and what more we could be doing. The survey will be open until the end of May and you can access it by following this link www.surveymonkey.com/s/GR2GXWT
Whether you are familiar with the project or not your comments will be useful. Please have a look at it and help us to help you better. |

Local Area Agreements
Communities and Local Government conducted a survey in 2009 to explore how the Local Area Agreements were helping partnerships achieve positive outcomes for local people. One East Midlands brings you a summary of the survey results focusing on outcomes for the community and voluntary sector. The Survey covered all upper tier local authorities in England with signed Local Area Agreements.

The network aims to strengthen advice services through networking, training and improved communication between groups, advice workers and funders.
The East Midlands Funding Forum has produced a report on their last event which looked at the future of funding for the region.
