High Peak CVS is 5

The High Peak CVS AGM was held last Thursday and was a great opportunity to celebrate our work over the last five years, and to look ahead to the next five.  Kelly Hart from the Big Lottery gave an excellent presentation about ‘the Big Lottery in the High Peak’. We hope that those that attended found it useful, in learning more about the work that we undertake and the services we provide. If you couldn’t attend, we blogged live from the event on our special ‘microsite’ – www.highpeakcvsis5.org.uk

We set up this microsite for a number of reasons - for those that couldn’t attend; to provide a record of the event, to promote the use of technology in voluntary groups…and as a way to gather your views about the work we do in the HighPeak.

So, please go onto the site and leave a comment:

  • Have we got the balance of the services we provide as a CVS?
  • Should we be doing more policy work?
  • Should we be providing more funding advice and support for local groups?
  • What type of training should we be providing?
  • Are we too focused on money?

Whatever you think about our work, please tell us - good and bad. It will help us grow and develop over the next five years and beyond.

Sharing Personal Information

The final version of the framework code of practice for sharing personal information (between organisations) has now been published by the Information Commissioner. Download in pdf (220kb).

Advising the Office of the Third Sector

The Government's Office of the Third Sector is looking to strengthen and rationalise its advisory structure, which currently sees a wide range of voices advising ministers on third sector policy, including advisory groups such as the Voluntary and Community Advisory Group, the Futurebuilders Advisory Panel and the Infrastructure National Partnership. Views on how to improve this are invited to 18 October, with the new advisory group due to be set up in April 2008.  For further information, go to: www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/third_sector/third_sector_review/New_advisory_group.aspx

Have Your Say - Innovation Networks

The Innovation Exchange, newly funded by the Government, is running a poll on the issue that should be the focus of Innovation Networks, which they will establish and support over the next three years. The five options are: Reduction in re-offending by prolific offenders, Reducing harm of drug and alcohol misuse in families, Return to work for over 50s on incapacity benefit or job seekers allowance, Reduction in homelessness for young people or Improved access to benefits for older people.
See www.innovation-unit.co.uk/content/view/398/786/. (No deadline mentioned.)

More Support for Small Charities

Third Sector reports that the Small Charities Coalition is expected to be launched on 5 November, with the Directory of Social Change (DSC) as host. The DSC chief executive is amongst those lined up as trustees. The Coalition has also secured a £50,000 grant from the Tudor Trust and aims to provide a ‘bridge of support’ between large and small charities. European Funding for Conservation

A European Union programme aiming to provide match-funding support for environmental projects addressing nature conservation and environmental policy has issued its call for proposals. LIFE+ is managed directly by the European Commission, and there is almost 15 million euros available across the UK, of which at least 50% must be allocated to nature and biodiversity projects. Deadline for this round 30th November. Community NI news item:

Successful Strategies from Experience

'Successful strategies: Real learning from real experiences' draws on five small and medium-sized  voluntary organisations which took part in the Performance Hub's action research project on how to create a good strategy. For the top practical tips read the summary or full report (both pdf format) via
www.performancehub.org.uk/successfulstrategiesreport.

Monitoring and Evaluation Resources

A catalogue of monitoring and evaluation resources has been compiled by Charities Evaluation Services, detailing over 100 books, tools, discussion papers, web sites etc. Information is contained in pdf format sheets: www.ces-vol.org.uk/index.cfm?pg=315.  CES has also published summary findings from a survey on monitoring and evaluation practice in the third sector. www.ces-vol.org.uk/index.cfm?pg=306.

Sources of Financial Help for Individuals

A ‘groundbreaking online service’ provides individuals with details of all of the benefits and grants available to them from both statutory and voluntary organisations. Run by a new charity, turn2us, although it appears to have close links with Elizabeth Finn Care. www.turn2us.org.uk.
