Making it Easier for Community Groups to Recycle

High Peak CVS has recently undertaken an environmental impact survey with a number of local groups.  Many groups with premises mentioned that they would like to have a green recycling box serviced by the Borough Council so that they could encourage recycling amongst their staff and volunteers.

High Peak Borough Council’s Recycling Team was interested in this news.  They have offered to look at including community and voluntary organisations in their schedules for green box collection.

If you would like to have a green box for recycling at your premises, please send an email to esther@highpeakcvs.org.uk by Monday 2nd June, giving the following details:

  • Organisation name
  • Name of contact person with a contact daytime phone or email address
  • Address and location of premises where green box collection is required
  • Permission to pass these details on to the Borough Council’s Recycling Team

The Recycling Team cannot guarantee that they will be able to meet every request, but they are interested in increasing recycling!

Grab a Handful of Cash to Make High Peak Greener

High Peak Borough Council is inviting groups operating throughout the Borough to apply for grants for environment projects, as part of our Going Local initiative for cleaner, greener and safer communities.

The grants of up to £500 are to help charities, voluntary organisations, community groups and schools reduce energy use, save water, cut down on waste or reduce transport impacts.

The environment grants are limited to 2008 only. They will be allocated on a first come first served basis, as long as the applications meet the aims of the grants scheme.

John Haken, Executive Councillor for the Environment, said: "Climate change is today's most significant challenge and it faces everyone. The Council wants to encourage community groups to take action to reduce the impact of their activities upon the environment. If you belong to an organisation that has some ideas about helping to improve our environment, then please consider making an application for an environment grant."

Application forms, and the criteria by which applications will be awarded, can be viewed and downloaded from Thursday 15 May, from the Environment section of our website at:
www.highpeak.gov.uk/environment/energy/climatechange.asp. Applications can also be made online.Alternatively, you can request application forms from us by calling 0845 129 77 77, or by collecting them personally from one of the Council's receptions.

Researching How to Consult the Third Sector

A research project commissioned by the Office of the Third Sector is looking at effective and innovative consultation with the third sector in England.  Due to report by the end of October 2008, key questions are:

  • How can government most effectively consult with third sector organisations?
  • How can it reach organisations normally under-represented in government consultations?
  • Are there specific ways in which consultation with the third sector differs from other government consultation?

Website: www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/third_sector.aspx

Measure the Impact of Volunteers in Sport

Volunteering England and the Institute of Volunteering Research have created a specific set of web-based tools for sport organisations to assess their own volunteering impacts.  This is part of a project which tested the current Volunteering Impact Assessment Toolkit with 100 volunteers and players across three sports, and a final report about the methods and findings behind those new tools has also been published.  The latter, 'A Winning Team? The impacts of volunteers in sport', can be downloaded as a pdf, 307KB  The sport tools to measure impact of volunteering are available via www.volunteering.org.uk/sport, or read press release.

Recognising Individual Action

Nominations for the 2008 Beacon Prize are now open.  This has five categories plus regional awards recognising people who have made a significant charitable contribution in giving time, money or skills to a specific cause.  Deadline is 1st July. www.beaconfellowship.org.uk/press_releases.asp?rel=1135

Changing Social Attitudes, Evaluating Campaigns, Sharing Contract Delivery

Three new publications from various parts of NCVO are available online or for open download in whole or part:

  • 'Future Focus 5: How are social attitudes changing?' pocket guide helps you understand how changing social attitudes may affect your organisation in the future, and think about opportunities and challenges these changes present.
    www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/publications/publication.asp?id=8748
  • With public bodies reducing the number of contracts they hold, 'Consortia delivery of public services' explores three consortia models for voluntary and community organisations: a new legal body, one organisation takes lead responsibility or an external non-delivering organisation takes the lead.
    www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/collaborativeworkingunit/index.asp?id=7054
  • 'Is your campaign making a difference?' shows how simple and effective monitoring and evaluation can be a powerful tool.  Structured in three parts, section A: 'getting the basics in place' can be downloaded as a pdf, and has some useful starting points.

Donate a PC – Computer Hardware for the Voluntary and Community Sector

There is a free 'matchmaking' service for individuals and organisations to donate un-needed hardware (computers, printers and so on) to UK charities, not-for-profit organisations and educational establishments (hardware only – not software).

It is primarily for those with only one or two items to donate and/or who can not use a suitable recycling organisation.

However they also have a comprehensive list of organisations that have larger quantities of computer equipment to donate to charities.

Mind – Ecominds BIG Changing Spaces Funding

The Big Lottery Fund has awarded Mind £8.8million from its Changing Spaces programme to start up an exciting new grants scheme.  'Ecominds' will fund projects across England that will help transform local environments and build the confidence and self-esteem of people with mental health problems.

Ecominds aims to reduce the stigma and social exclusion faced by people with mental health problems by funding environmental projects that bring people together right across the community.  Over the next five years Ecominds will award grants up to the value of £250,000 to 125 environmental projects.  Examples of eco-projects eligible for funding could include returning habitats to their natural state, starting up recycling initiatives or community agricultural projects.

Schools, community groups and voluntary organisations will be encouraged to apply for funding.  They must develop plans that show how they intend to rejuvenate their local environment but most importantly, show how they will involve local people with mental health problems on their eco-project.
