Walk over glass at Pride Park

Sight Support Derbyshire have another first for you to have a go it as you can take part in the first ever glass walk at Pride Park Stadium.

On the 22nd March you have the opportunity to walk barefoot over 4 metres of smashed sterile wine bottle glass at Derby County’s Pride Park Stadium. The event will be run by Time4Change and their instructor Cliff Mann has spent 2 decades guiding thousands of people over glass.

Cliff says’ Walking on glass is an exercise in challenging and developing the mind and body connection. It proves to be a rewarding and unforgettable experience in your journey to a greater understanding of how to breakdown the deep routed fears we carry around with us’.

Full 2hr training will take place at 6.30pm with the glass walk taking place at 8.30pm. To take part all we ask is that you raise £100 in sponsorship. For more information and to register a team contact Sight Support Derbyshire on 01332 287 027 or fundraising@sightsupportderbyshire.org.uk

What Would You Choose, Heating or Eating?

As fuel bills rise and household incomes fall, it’s a sad fact that some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Derbyshire will be facing the choice of ‘heating or eating’ this winter. As part of a campaign that seeks to tackle the impact of fuel poverty, Advice Derbyshire have developed an online database of food banks and schemes operating across Derbyshire.

The resource allows users, and in particular front line workers, to search for their nearest scheme by postcode, which will provide a detailed map and information about any available services. In the New Year Advice Derbyshire will extend this work to include the collection and distribution of food donations, and are eager to work with partners to identify and address any gaps in provision. To access the resource click here, and please do let others know it is there.

For further information about the campaign please contact Kris Ambler at kris.ambler@advicederbyshire.org

RAD Domestic Oil Heating Syndicate

Rural Action Derbyshire has launched a new social enterprise that it says “will be good for individuals, good for the environment and good for Rural Action Derbyshire.”

The scheme will use the model of a local buying syndicate for domestic heating oil but will roll it out across the whole of Derby and Derbyshire. Experience has already shown that it’s possible to get a discount of around £50 on a single order. Community organisations and businesses will be able to join the scheme, which will be run by Rural Action Derbyshire and based on a scheme in Oxfordshire. The environment benefits too, as the more deliveries made in one place, the less fuel is used.

Chief Executive Sylvia Green says ‘ local people who will collate the syndicate members’ oil orders once a month and pass the information on to us; and who will then let the local members know the cost per litre and the delivery date. That’s pretty much it. For doing this, they will get free membership of the scheme – an annual saving of £20”.

There’s more information from Rural Action Derbyshire via www.ruralactionderbyshire.org.uk/oil or email oil@ruralactionderbyshire.org.uk or call 01629 824797.

If your company currently supplies oil either to domestic or business users and you want to ensure your details are registered as a local distribution company you can also contact RAD on the above details.

Charities 'paying £78m of unnecessary energy taxes this year'

Price comparison service says many aren't aware of discounts and exemptions

An article on the Third Sector Daily Website reports that charities will pay about £78m of unnecessary tax on their energy bills in 2011, a price comparison service has estimated.

According to a survey by Make It Cheaper, almost of half of third sector bodies do not know they can get a VAT discount and are exempt from the climate change levy.

Charities have to pay only 5 per cent VAT on energy used for "non-business activities" for which the charity’s only income is donations or grants, according to the HM Revenue & Customs website. They can get the VAT discount on all their energy supplies if these non-business activities account for at least 60 per cent of their energy.

Business activities include fundraising events, such as jumble sales, where payment is received for goods or services. They can also claim tax discounts on energy used in services for poor, disabled, ill or elderly people provided significantly below cost.

Charities have to send a certificate, including their charity number, to their energy supplier to claim the discount.

    Charities Act 2011

The Charities Bill received Royal Assent on 14 December, becoming the Charities Act 2011. It consolidates existing charities legislation into a single Act of Parliament.

The Charities Act 2011 brings together provisions of the Recreational Charities Act 1958, the Charities Act 1993 and much of the Charities Act 2006, all since amended by other legislation. The Act updates the text and simplifies the structure of the existing legislation, but it does not change the existing law or introduce new policy.

Good Governance: A Code for the Voluntary and Community Sector

A Steering Group consisting of ACEVO, NCVO, Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and the Small Charities Coalition has produced Good Governance: A Code for the Voluntary and Community Sector, which is aimed at anyone interested in or responsible for governance, and particularly aimed at small organisations.

The Code publishes six principles which include understanding the board's role, doing what the organisation was set up to do, working effectively, control, behaving with integrity and openness and accountability. The document outlines why each principle is important and also outlines examples of what they mean in practice.
