Using the Arts to Develop Aspiration, Leadership and Potential
23 June 2010, 10.00 am to 4.15 pm, Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham
Artsplan, the training and publications department of Artswork and the in-house training provider of ENYAN (English National Youth Arts Network) is pleased to announce the launch of a NEW Youth Arts Training Course: ‘Using the Arts to Develop Aspiration, Leadership and Potential’.
The one-day course has been developed following a period of research conducted by ENYAN, throughout the nine English regions into how participation in cultural activities can have a significant impact on young people’s development and can give young people the chance to develop important life skills such as creativity, confidence, self discipline, effective communication and the ability to work in teams. This course is suitable for anyone, professional or voluntary, seeking to use or develop the arts in their work with young people. It looks to demonstrate how the arts can be used as a mechanism to develop young people’s leadership skills, aspiration and potential. It celebrates inspirational examples of young people who have excelled through engagement in youth-led arts projects, continue to achieve well and are an inspiration to both the youth and cultural sectors at large. The course also benefits from being part facilitated by young people who have taken on leadership roles within a creative setting.
All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the course and a wealth of practical resources. Prices for each course, which include lunch and refreshments, range from £110 to £150, with limited bursaries available. Please also remember that ENYAN members can request a 5% discount on all Artsplan publications and training!
For more information on the course and to book a place, please contact The Artsplan Team, on artsplan@artswork.org.uk or call 02380 682 535. |

Legal Updates Including on Vetting and Barring Scheme
The latest Charity and Social Enterprise Law Update from solicitors Bates Wells and Braithwaite has a range of useful articles. These include issues around the new Equalities Act, the European Commission's review of procurement legislation, social (enterprise) franchising and updates on the Vetting and Barring Scheme. The latter notes that "all new workers and volunteers who start or move into new regulated activity roles after 1 November 2010 must register with the ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority) before they start in that new role.” They will be able to register with the ISA from 26 July, with new disclosure application forms (for CRB disclosures and ISA registration) introduced that month – current CRB application forms won't be accepted after 26 July.

New Ministers for the Sector
The new government has announced that Nick Hurd will be the Minister for Civil Society, in the Cabinet Office, with responsibility for charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations. Hurd had been shadow charities minister for the eighteen months before the general election, and is the Conservative MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner. Official news release:
www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/newsroom/news_releases/2010/100518-hurd.aspx
On his initial appointment on Friday (before the job title was confirmed), he and department boss Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office, stated that Government policy would focus on three fundamental issues:
- making it easier to run a charity, social enterprise or voluntary organisation;
- getting more resources into the sector: strengthening its independence and resilience; and
- making it easier for sector organisations to work with the state.

Third Sector Bad Language
NAVCA will no longer use the term 'local infrastructure organisation', instead they will talk about 'local support and development organisations'. 'Voluntary and community action' and 'voluntary organisations and community groups' will be used as a matter of preference, instead of 'third sector' and 'third sector organisations'.
