    The WORKSHOPS

The day’s workshops are aimed to cover the principal concerns of running a voluntary or community group.

Fundraising and keeping your organisation afloat financially

This session will cover the essential elements of how to get funding for your project.  It will include planning your project, selecting the right funder, key points in making an application and tips on staying afloat in the long term.

The tutor Sandy Schofield has 10 years experience as a community development worker with the High Peak CVS Small Group’s Project, working with a wide range of voluntary and community groups in the High Peak. During that time she has a notable track record of successfully supporting groups to raise funds from grant applications and other methods.

    Working with young volunteers

This workshop will revolve around engaging and retaining young volunteers.  It will look into why young people volunteer and how organisations can use these motivations to firstly attract volunteers through strong marketing, and then retain them by creating opportunities that are appropriate for this age group.  We will also look at ways in which organisations can keep young people’s interest once they are volunteering with them.

The tutors Cathryn Hamer and Jen Walsh  are working for Volunteer Centre Glossop on the “vinvolved Derbyshire” programme.  This programme is part of the new National Youth Volunteering Programme “v” which was introduced in April 2008. Derbyshire’s vinvolved team aims to inspire 16-25 year olds across the county to get positively involved in their communities by increasing the quality, quantity and diversity of volunteering opportunities available to them.  For more information about v please see www.wearev.com.

    Managing Yourself: Managing your group

Every voluntary or community group has to be well organised to make the most of its resources. This workshop will look at the challenges of managing a voluntary sector organisation – whether using paid workers or volunteers.

It will cover management committee roles and responsibilities, and getting the best from all parts of the organisation.

The tutor Nigel Caldwell is the High Peak CVS Development Programme Manager and has over 20 years experience in the voluntary sector at all levels – paid worker, management committee member and volunteer.

Calendar Design Competition to Promote Your Organisation

Digital Umbrella (the web design social enterprise of the charity High Peak Community and Voluntary Support) and local printers Peak Press are holding a calendar competition for Organisations and Voluntary and Community Groups.

To take part you should submit a colour design for the top part of a single-sheet A4 calendar. This could be a photograph, a drawing, or a computer generated image, but should be no bigger than 11cm by 21cm.

The winners will be able to spend 2 hours with a professional designer to develop their winning design. This design will then be relayed to Peak Press who will print 100 calendars for them to use for promotions and fund raising. The finished calendar will be an A4 single sheet in colour .

Designs must either be submitted by email to Nicola@digitalumbrella.co.uk or by post to Nicola Dinsdale, Digital Umbrella, 1a Bingswood Trading Estate, Whaley Bridge , High Peak, SK23 7LY.

Entries must be received by 12pm Monday 15th December 2008. They must include a name and contact telephone number. Judging will take place during that week and the winner will be notified by phone.

Big Thinking - The Big Lottery Consultation

Big thinking has launched - the consultation on The Big Lottery Fund's strategic framework for 2009 – 2015.

BIG thinking is about looking back on what The Big Lottery have achieved and looking forward to what they can do even better between 2009 and 2015. It is about celebrating success and learning from the accumulated experience of more than 10 years of Lottery funding.

This is your opportunity to tell them what you think and help them decide where Lottery money can make the biggest impact .

Much of the discussion will take place at www.big-thinking.org.uk

They hope you’ll take the time to get involved and contribute your Big thoughts by completing the online consultation survey.
