Help with Accessibility

RNID Products, the charity's retail arm, has produced a guide on the help and equipment available to comply with disability law.  The Sound Solutions catalogue, ‘helping you make your service accessible to deaf and hard of hearing people’, gives basic advice alongside information on what RNID can provide.  www.rnid.org.uk/soundsolutions

Codes of Conduct for Trustees

Resources to help management committees develop codes of conduct for trustees that are appropriate for their organisations are being put together by Charity Trustee Networks.  CTN believes that many existing codes of conduct are rarely used, so wants to ensure that these will be as helpful and practical as possible.  See their website on how to make suggestions: www.trusteenet.org.uk/news/addressing-tricky-and-sensitive-issues-board

Updated Working Standards for Fundraisers

The updated National Occupational Standards for Fundraising have been approved and published.  These are relevant if raising funds is a role you perform or manage and whether it is the focus or a small part of your working remit.  Details on the Workforce Hub site at www.ukworkforcehub.org.uk/fnos08

Accreditation for Volunteer Youth Workers Proposed

The development of a volunteer youth workers accreditation scheme has been proposed by National Council for Voluntary Youth Services as an integral component of the government's youth workforce reform plans.  More, with link to NCVYS proposals, on Workforce Hub: www.ukworkforcehub.org.uk/DisplayPage.asp?pageid=12426

Compact Action Plan

The Joint Compact Action Plan for 2008 to 2009 has been published, setting out the priorities for progressing the partnership between government and the voluntary and community sector (and parts of the wider third sector) through the Compact.  Download from news item at www.thecompact.org.uk/news/100019/news/

Barnardo’s Image Archive Goes Digital

The large historical image archive built up since the 1870s by Barnardo's is to be made available in digital format.  Picture library TopFoto.co.uk will initially scan 150,000 images and selected material will be licensed to earn income for the charity.  www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=9957

Tree Council Grants – Trees for Schools/Community Trees

The Tree Council's two grants programmes, the ‘Trees for Schools' and ‘Community Trees' funds are available for schools and community groups within the UK who are able to show that children under the age of 16 will be actively engaged in the planting projects.  The Tree Council's National Tree Week (this year from 26th November to 7th December) is the focus for these projects and successful applicants organise their planting events in conjunction with our annual celebration of the new tree planting season.

They are able to fund projects between £100 and £700 and successful applicants will receive up to 75% towards their planting costs.  For example, if your project totals £700, The Tree Council would offer up to £525.  The remaining 25% will need to be secured by your school or organisation.  This grant is open to community groups, both formal and ad hoc, within the United Kingdom.

The closing date for applications is 31st May 2008.

The Grants Committee have now revised their guidelines in relation to the funding of fruit trees.  Guidance notes and application forms can be downloaded from their website.
