' The BiG Idea ' Project Launch Event

Thursday 7 February 2008
The Devonshire Dome, Buxton

Vision Buxton would like to invite you to join us in celebrating the launch of the Big Idea:

The Enterprise Centre for Buxton ’

The BiG Idea project is an exciting arts venture arising from the vision of a network of creative people in Buxton, who have recognised the need and benefit for artists, voluntary organisations and businesses to develop ideas together in a shared space.

Their vision is of a range of artistic, voluntary, community, enterprise groups and start-up businesses working together, developing relationships, exploring their own and collective aspirations, collaborating, co-operating in creative ways to deliver benefits to the local community.

This perception of the value from close collaboration and the need for a shared workspace has grown over the past few years as the membership involved in ‘Vision Buxton’ has established networks and partnerships with local creative groups, community and business organisations.

Whilst growing strongly from these roots in the local community, the actual prospect of establishing shared premises for the project has received a strong stimulus with the availability of a suitable building in Buxton.

We have identified a large property located behind the Buxton Museum & Art Gallery in central Buxton, which is inspirational to the BiG Idea project.  It’s a collective creative space for Buxton and the High Peak in which new businesses can flourish in an incubator atmosphere and the aspiring artists/community can find support, resources, interaction and stimulation to develop ideas alongside community groups.

If you are interested in attending, please contact Nicola Anthony from Vision Buxton on 07980 957981 or email nicola@visionbuxton.co.uk

Lottery Helps Communities Shrink Carbon Footprint

A multi-million pound scheme to help communities become more energy efficient and ease the financial impact of rising energy costs has been announced by the Big Lottery Fund.

BIG's award of £10-million to sustainable energy specialists Building Research Establishment (BRE), will enable communities across England to reduce their carbon footprint.  BRE will manage the Community Sustainable Energy grant scheme to help local organisations tackle pivotal environmental issues by becoming more energy efficient.

The award comes from BIG's Changing Spaces programme, which aims to improve rural and urban environments and enable communities across England to lead healthier and more environmentally sustainable lifestyles.  BIG has to date committed over £182 million to projects helping communities improve and enjoy their local spaces through its Changing Spaces initiative.

Through the Community Sustainable Energy Programme, groups can apply for grants to install small-scale energy efficient technology such as wind turbines or solar panels on sites including village halls, visitor centres or schools. Funding to improve building insulation will also be offered.

Coupled with those objectives is the drive to inform and raise public awareness of climate change and how altering building methods and adopting energy efficient practices can reduce it.  Development grants are also available to help community organisations research new technologies that will benefit them most.

Full details of the Big Lottery Fund programmes and grant awards are available on the website www.biglotteryfund.org.uk

Googling for Grants

The Google Grants UK beta programme supports organisations sharing their philosophy of community service to help the world in areas such as science and technology, education, global public health, the environment, youth advocacy, and the arts. www.google.co.uk/grants/.

Red Nose Day UK Programmes 2005-08

During 2005-08 they are concentrating their funding on 7 programme areas: Young People; around issues of alcohol, mental health and those being sexually exploited or trafficked; Older People; Mental Health; Refugees & Asylum Seekers; Domestic Violence.  They make two types of grants in their open programmes.

They support voluntary groups and organisations throughout the UK. These are usually registered charities but they also fund some constituted groups with a written set of rules with charitable objectives.

They fund work all over the UK and are very keen to make sure that their funding reaches all parts of the country, especially areas which often miss out, such as rural communities.

For grants over £5000 the next deadline is February 29th 2008. For grants under £5000 there is no deadline. Dates of other cycles can be found on their website. They are likely to close all these grant programmes in December 2008.  All applications should reach them by this date to ensure they are considered in the next funding cycle.
