Mentoring & Befriending Awareness & Preparation Workshop
Are you working within the Mentoring or Befriending sector?
Do you use volunteers in the roles of mentors or befrienders?
The mentoring and Befriending Foundation would like to invite you to the Approved Provider Standard (APS) Awareness and Preparation workshop taking place in your area in November.
This is one of a series of workshops taking place across the country, is free of charge and includes lunch.
The APS is the national benchmark for organisations providing one-to-one volunteer mentoring and befriending.
It is a national award supported by the Cabinet Office and Department for Children, Schools and Families, and aims to provide programmes with a badge of competence and safe effective practice in mentoring or befriending.
The event is designed for those wishing to explore the benefits of the standard and find out more about the straightforward application and accreditation process.
It is also open to those who have signed up to ‘working towards’ and those who may be looking to re-accreditation.
Date of event: Wednesday 28th November 2007
Venue: Notts County Football Club, Nottingham, NG2 3HJ
Times: 9.30 am – 1 pm
Book your place by clicking on the link below. This will take you to the booking form on the website - www.mandbf.org.uk/news/eventinfo/article/1569/37/

Train to be a Community Champion for the Environment
21st and 28th November 9.30 to 4pm at Losehill Hall, Peak District National Park Centre for Environmental Learning, Castleton, Hope Valley, S33 8WB
High Peak CVS is offering a superb training opportunity for people in the High Peak who are enthusiastic about the environment to become trained as ‘Community Champions’ to help local community groups, clubs and societies to create an environmental action plan for their group.
The training will provide all the expertise and resources you need. No formal experience or qualifications are necessary, but you must be over 18 and enthusiastic about your community and the sustainability of that community. After two days training, you'll probably spend a few hours a month meeting local groups, clubs and societies to help them create an action plan. It is hoped the Community Champions will be able to work with 2 -3 groups.
The Training
The two day course covers the themes of ‘Save our Resources’, ‘Shop Ethically’, ‘Save Energy’, ‘Travel Wisely’ and ‘Care for Your Area’, and includes tips on presentation and facilitation skills. It is also a great opportunity to spend some time with others concerned about the environment, but the number of places is limited!
Training is FREE - lunch included. Travel to training courses and reasonable expenses while being a Champion will be covered by the Every Action Counts programme.
To receive a booking form please contact: Esther Jones - as soon as possible, and definitely by 5th November.

Final Stage of Data Protection Law
The final transitional exemption from the Data Protection Act 1998, covering paper records, ended on 23rd October. Personal data which was gathered prior to 24th October 1998 is now covered by accuracy requirements too. Most paper records will still be exempt, as the DPA only applies to information held on structured manual files. See Out-law.com article at www.out-law.com/page-8572. |

An email address for response is also given. |

Tackling Environmental Impact of Charities
Plaza's Charity News Alert reports that the Charity Commission would look kindly on charities striving to reduce their environmental impacts even if this is not specifically stated in their objects, according to their legal adviser at the Commission's discussion event on environmental responsibility last week. Emma Knuckey said that “Although there are legal constraints we would encourage flexibility and innovation” and pointed to examples of religious charities as stakeholders in a God-created environment. www.plazapublishing.co.uk/enviromental.html. |

Union Launches Sector Anti-Bullying Campaign
Unite, Britain's biggest union, has launched a campaign to combat bullying in the not-for-profit sector, following union representatives reporting that they have to deal with bullying related cases more than any other issue. The union (which includes the old Amicus) believes that a lack of training for managers, coupled with the increasing pressures that workers are put under in the sector, exacerbates the bullying. A dedicated email address has been set up to report incidents. News release at
www.amicustheunion.org/default.aspx?page=7298. |

Campaign for a Community Bank Holiday
A campaign for a new bank holiday celebrating and promoting voluntary community activity was launched on Monday (29th October). Supported by Volunteering England, TUC, CSV, NAVCA and NCVO, Community Day would fall during the autumn half term break. www.communityday.org.uk. |

People and Participation
An empowerment action plan, produced in partnership with the Local Government Association, was published last week by Communities Secretary Hazel Blears, with 18 local authorities to act as empowerment champions "to spearhead a reinvigoration of local democracy". News release at
www.communities.gov.uk/news/corporate/516935?version=2.
Other initiatives around community assets and petitions have been announced previously, although a consultation on the latter is due soon. A new People and Participation web site was also launched at www.peopleandparticipation.net to provide practical information for those working to involve people, and registered users can upload case studies and ask questions. |
