' The BiG Idea ' Project Launch Event

    Thursday 7th February 2008
    The Devonshire Dome, Buxton
4pm - 5.30pm at the Devonshire Dome, followed by a visit to the British Legion premises between 5.45 – 6.15pm with a follow up session between 6.30 to 8pm.

Vision Buxton would like to invite you to join us in celebrating the launch of the Big Idea:

The Enterprise Centre for Buxton ’

The BiG Idea project is an exciting arts venture arising from the vision of a network of creative people in Buxton, who have recognised the need and benefit for artists, voluntary organisations and businesses to develop ideas together in a shared space.

Their vision is of a range of artistic, voluntary, community, enterprise groups and start-up businesses working together, developing relationships, exploring their own and collective aspirations, collaborating, co-operating in creative ways to deliver benefits to the local community.

This perception of the value from close collaboration and the need for a shared workspace has grown over the past few years as the membership involved in ‘Vision Buxton’ has established networks and partnerships with local creative groups, community and business organisations.

Whilst growing strongly from these roots in the local community, the actual prospect of establishing shared premises for the project has received a strong stimulus with the availability of a suitable building in Buxton.

We have identified a large property located behind the Buxton Museum & Art Gallery in central Buxton, which is inspirational to the BiG Idea project.  It’s a collective creative space for Buxton and the High Peak in which new businesses can flourish in an incubator atmosphere and the aspiring artists/community can find support, resources, interaction and stimulation to develop ideas alongside community groups:

    • Small  business incubator work space
    • Flexible arts exhibition and performance/festival space
    • Flexible meeting rooms which can be turned into training facilities
    • Lounge/communal areas for networking
    • Café and combined retail facility to promote tenants’ products and services
    Prominent Keynote Speakers include:

    • Trevor Osborne, Osborne Property Group and developer of The Crescent, Buxton
    • Bill Preece, Chief Executive Officer of Otter Controls
    • Nottingham Business Ventures
    • A case study: ‘The experience of setting up a business incubator’

If you are interested in attending, please contact Nicola Anthony from Vision Buxton on 07980 957981 or email nicola@visionbuxton.co.uk

    Peak District Enterprise Initiative

The Peak District Rural Pathfinder is launching a pilot project called the Peak District Enterprise Initiative. The initiative will focus on raising awareness of enterprise and the work of associated support services, organisations and networks operating in the Peak District.

The main pilot programme will take place over Enterprise Week and consist of as many small events as possible running throughout the Peak District during the week of the 13th – 19th November. The aim of this is to bring as many entrepreneurs, home based businesses, small to medium sizes businesses, support agencies, the Community and Voluntary Sector,  local networks and the Local Authorities together under one banner to promote and sell the Peak District as a leader in enterprise and small business development.

It is here that we would like to ask for your help. We are looking for volunteers to stage one or more of the following events within the Peak District between the 13th and 19th of November 2006.

    • Network Lunches, Seminars or Breakfast Briefings on any enterprise related subject.
    • A Funding Fair or Funding support event, i.e. advice on sources of funding for enterprise initiatives
    • Speed Networking Events. (Business Links are running one on the 17th November at Buxton). Could similar events happen elsewhere in the Peaks?
    • Five-a-Side Football games between organisations, businesses or community / voluntary sector. Here you just need to nominate a team made up of your members e.g. Young Farmers, PDNPA, Business Links etc and we will do the rest.
    • Job Swap for the day – Swap your role with a colleague for an hour, half a day or full day.
    • Job Shadow for the day – Shadow someone from a partner organisation or business for the day, or just an afternoon.
    • Any other events we have missed out, such as fashion shows, network meetings, business training days or social / pub events.

In all we are looking for this to be as fun and enjoyable as possible for everyone. We are looking for simple, easy-to-manage events that won’t take up too much of your time, but will give the Peak District a huge boost economically and socially.

The Peak District Rural Pathfinder will act as the co-ordinating hub, ensuring that the whole area is engaged for Enterprise Week. There is already considerable interest from the press in what could be a week that puts the Peak District on the enterprise map.

Everyone taking part in this pilot project will get recognition in any promotional work or press outputs, as well as being able to give greater support to enterprises and communities living in the Peaks.

Time is short so please could you indicate which event/s you are most interested in running by no later than Friday 6th October. We will then help you to promote your event as well as link it with all other activities within the Peaks.

For further information on Enterprise Week see starttalkingideas.org/enterpriseweek/2006/ this site will give you further information and access to free promotional materials.

    Festival Forum
Thursday 2nd November in the Paxton Suite, Pavilion Gardens, Buxton at 7.00pm

High Peak’s growing reputation as a hotbed of creative talent has been reinforced by the success of one of its latest arts-based initiatives – the Festivals Forum. Since the Forum was set up earlier this year, no less than 80 organisers and promoters of the Borough’s Festivals and events have flocked to take advantage of the networking and training opportunities on offer.

“Whatever their size, scope or budget, festivals tend to face similar issues and problems, so it made sense to set up a forum where organisers could meet regularly and share information as well as their skills and expertise,” said Whaley Bridge-based Arts Development Officer Richard Johnson. Richard is  based  at High Peak CVS, the Whaley Bridge based voluntary organisation that supports community and voluntary groups across the borough

“My work is based on the aims of the High Peak Arts Strategy, which, among other things, highlights the need to support and help the many festivals in the borough – from the major, professionally run Festival to the smallest village event” he added.

“The Forum is an ideal way to do that, because it brings both professionals and volunteers together under one roof, enabling them to pool their knowledge and experiences, both good and bad, as well as exchanging ideas that will help them in the future.

“We also set up regular training sessions to address issues that organisers face, such as marketing and promotion, health and safety, project management and the new licensing laws.”

As it grows, it is hoped the Forum will give organisers and promoters a platform to influence wider issues such as the future of arts funding and promoting festivals as cultural tourism.

Anyone representing a festival in the High Peak is welcome to attend. For further details contact Richard at High Peak CVS on 01663 735350 or 07840 255384 or by email.

    • whether the Local Network Fund can fund your next project idea

    • from 'Funderfinder' and other resources what other sources of funding are available for your activities

There's also a free workshop entitled 'Consultation and beyond: Involving young people in project planning'. It's always good to involve youngsters in planning their activities, and increasingly funders are also asking for evidence of this in grant applications - so how do you do it?

Youngsters are very welcome to attend the event but must be accompanied by a responsible adult. There will be arts workshops for youngsters of all ages in the latter part of the afternoon, and hopefully performances by youngsters too.

Valuing the Voluntary Sector - a series of special events for voluntary and community groups in the High Peak

Valuing the voluntary sector is a series of special events, organised by High Peak CVS, and taking place across the borough in October. They build on the success of our “Funders fortnight” in Autumn 2003, and are designed to help voluntary and community groups understand and make the most of different funding streams. You could be a parent and toddler group who need funding to meet weekly running costs, a youth project needing funding to open a new service, an older person’s group that needs funding for equipment, or a village hall committee looking to improve building access - there is something here for all.
    Monitoring and Evaluating Your Project
Tuesday 5th October, 10am –2.30pm, High Peak CVS, Whaley Bridge
Increasingly, funders are asking for monitoring information so they can assess the impact that their funding is having. This ½ day training session will show what monitoring and evaluation is,
how to build monitoring and evaluation systems and methods into your projects and organisation. This session is completely free, includes lunch and is being run by Derbyshire Dales CVSs’ Hester Messom.

Celebrating the Success of the Local Network Fund
The LNF funds projects and activities run by local voluntary and community groups to meet the needs of children and young people aged 0 – 19 years old. This Celebration Event will showcase some of the innovative projects which the LNF has already funded in the High Peak.
It’s also an ideal opportunity to find out more about the fund, and discuss your future funding needs with the fund’s administrators, Derbyshire Community Foundation.
Whether you’ve had funding from the LNF in the past, or you work with youngsters and would like to know more about the fund, please come along. Children are welcome too (but must be
accompanied by an adult) and High Peak Community Arts will be running an arts activity for youngsters during the event. We will be providing light refreshments.

    Funders Fair
Tuesday 12th October, The Octagon Lounge, Pavilion Gardens, Buxton
Come along, meet with individual grant funders such as the Community Fund, Derbyshire Community Foundation and Lloyds TSB foundations and discuss project proposals or just see what could be available to your organisation. Drop in any time during the afternoon, the event
is open 1.30pm –4.30pm. Our first funders fair took place last September, and it was a great success – and we hope this one will be even better. Last year, groups got great benefit from
the opportunity to talk informally with funders about their plans and gain an insight into individual funders requirements.

    Bright Ideas for Sustainable Funding
    Wednesday 13th October , 10.00am – 4.00pm*, New Mills Volunteer Centre
A special one day FREE training event, delivered by NCVO’s Sustainable Funding Project. This
Project encourages and enables third sector organisations to become more financially
sustainable, through strategic planning, grant diversification and income generation.
Within this approach, they have a particular interest in income generation. How can voluntary
and community organisations generate independent income from trading goods and
    services?
This session has no magic answers and is not focused on writing better bids, instead here is an

Update on In Sickness and In Health and Futurebuilders
    Tuesday 13 July, 9.30am-1.30pm
Cliff College, Calver (please note change of venue)

This open meeting , for the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales area, will welcome people from both the voluntary and statutory sectors. The aim is identifying areas where we can work together to improve the services that both sectors provide.

Partnership between the voluntary sector and the statutory sector is a priority on the government agenda and the investment plan for the £125 million Futurebuilders fund will be announced on July 5th 2004. The aim of the this fund is to increase the role voluntary and community sector plays in the delivery of public services. Investment of between £30,000 and several million will be made to around 250 organisations over the next three years. There will also be development grants of about £10,000 for some applicants.

One of the five public service delivery areas that Futurebuilders will invest in is Health and Social Care. Therefore In Sickness and In Health will provide an ideal opportunity for everyone working to improve services in the Derbyshire Dales and High Peak, to look at ways to develop joint initiatives. These joint initiatives may then attract new funds to the area.

For further details please contact Di McIntyre at High Peak CVS,

There will be two meetings in early February: the first is an opportunity for voluntary and community groups to have a say – what are the problems and difficulties with the current process and how could these be overcome; and the responses gained here will feed into a stakeholders meeting involving statutory and other funders, and voluntary sector infrastructure organisations. Pick 'n' Mix - one of the largest gatherings of funding sources for voluntary and community groups in the county meeting at Losehill Hall in Castleton for the first "Pick n Mix" funders fair. Organisations exhibiting or running workshops during the day include The Community Fund, The Countryside Agency, Prince's Trust, Derbyshire Rural Community Council and Lloyds TSB Foundations.

The event is targeted at members of voluntary and community groups across the area, the main aim being to equip them with information about the funding possibilities available, such as grants and how and where to apply for them, and to give them the opportunity to discuss with individual funders their specific plans, needs and requirements. In addition, there will be sessions on charity law and social inclusion.

The idea came from East Midlands Engage, who recognised the need for an event that could be accessed by those in rural areas, and is being run in a joint partnership with High Peak Council CVS and Derbyshire Dales CVS, based in Bakewell. It is funded by Lloyds TSB Foundations, The day will also allow the agencies and funders present to gather information which will used to develop a region wide picture of needs.

The event runs from 2pm to 8pm, and is called Pick 'n' Mix because it will give the participants the opportunity to pick the sessions that are most beneficial to them, and then drop in throughout the day and mix with the various funders and advisors on hand throughout.

The event is completely free to groups within either the High Peak or Derbyshire Dales area, but places are limited. To find out more, or to reserve your place, call High Peak CVS on 01663 735350 or email us hello@highpeakcvs.org.uk .
