ProHelp - Case Studies Jan-Mar 2005

I do hope that the case studies for this quarter will give you a feel of the sort of projects that High Peak and Derbyshire Dales ProHelp members are working on. So far Community groups have been very excited that they have received so much help, feedback has been very positive.

This quarter members have done work ‘in kind’ to the value of £9,650 which is wonderful support. I intend to pass on quotes from the evaluation forms in June. Thank you so much.

Flagg Village Hall have been able to submit plans along with their bid for a lottery grant to build a much needed extension to the Hall. It is a well used building but storage has become a huge problem and as a result their lettings potential is minimised. The disabled toilet requires some modernisation and an additional toilet is needed. They were delighted with the work done by ProHelp member Paul Dinsdale from PDA Architects of Buxton.

Foosteps is a community project in Whaley Bridge. The sale of books and drinks help to sustain the project which also provides IT training courses for all abilities. It is a valuable community resource where people go to talk, for training, for counselling, meetings and for social reasons.

The building is a converted shop on three floors badly in need of a disabled toilet, lift and work on the basement to convert it to an after school facility for young people. John McCall Architects from Hayfield have done extensive work on plans for the centre. They are currently raising funds for the project.

Cressbrook Club offer a meeting place for the community and for Cressbrook band. They needed advice and plans which might address the problems of disabled access. This has proved a very difficult project for architect Adrian Russell of Bakewell. Plans have now been completed and the club will continue to raise funds for the project.

Glossopdale Furniture Project has been given the option to purchase their currently rented site in Glossop. They collect unwanted furniture and sell on at low cost to needy families in the High Peak. They also have a recycling programme which makes garden and other furniture out of old wooden items which are not fit for sale. They currently have a joinery training programme which they would like to extend.

ProHelp member Sydney Bowen from Parker and Bowen of Hyde has completed a survey on the property to highlight the remedial work which is required. Member Richard Hubble from High Peak Architects of Whaley Bridge is currently working on the project to look at ways of maximising the use of the site.

Hollingwood After School Club provide childcare facilities during the holidays and out-of-school hours. Elliot Mather are currently providing advice as the club works its way towards incorporating and registering as a charity.

First Taste of Darley Dale offer interactive arts programmes to elderly people in care, day centres and nursing homes in the area. They are currently seeking advice from Elliot Mather Solicitors of Chesterfield on a tenancy issue.

Peak Forest Playgroup are a thriving childcare centre. They are hoping to become incorporated and a registered charity and are being advised by a solicitor.

Heath Village Community Association hope to gain charitable status and are being assisted in the process by Elliot Mather.
